Labor of Love that started as a family affair between of two families. Rev. Dunn from the Central Presbyterian Church and Marina Gutierrez (Emily’s mom) back in 1995 saw a need in the Haverstraw Community and decided they wanted to help feed families for Thanksgiving. Rev. Dunn open the basement of the Church and that cold Thanksgiving morning 47 people were given hot meals. Word spread through the Village of the generosity of these two individuals but Joe and Marina saw something unique in Haverstraw and something that was missing (Community and Togetherness). They decided with Christmas upon us what better way to bring the Joy of Giving and place smiles on the children. Businesses donated gifts, individuals volunteered to cook at the CP church and the annual Christmas luncheon was hosted that year at Quisqueya Sports Club to more than 100 people. Both families gave up their holidays every year to provide hot meals on Thanksgiving and a holiday luncheon with Christmas gifts on Christmas days. These events continued to grow and Emily become more active volunteering and organizing them. In 2005, Emily became the Chair of the Haverstraw Neighborhood Fund, a group dedicated to feeding local families in need on Thanksgiving and Christmas. The fund also provides presents and gifts for children during the holiday season. In 2010, Emily and the committee expanded to offer an annual Backpack Event to provide packed backpacks with school supplies for local students in need. In 2015, the committee officially became known as the Haverstraw Neighborhood Fund. These events are all possible because of the people who donate, volunteer, the committee members, our elected officials. It takes a lot of work and team effort to make each event successful and because of each and everyone one of you the Labor of Love of Community and Togetherness are accomplish.
Rev. Joe Dunn dream of bring the community together has finally been accomplished.

For the past nine years, the Haverstraw Neighborhood Fund has been able to provide children and families in need with backpacks, hot meals, activities, and children presents for the holiday season. In addition to Thanksgiving and Christmas, the Haverstraw Neighborhood Fund has been able to support children with backpacks filled with the necessary school supplies for the school season. We prepare children from grades kindergarten to high school. The Haverstraw Neighborhood Fund makes the Back-to-School Backpack Event a whole day family event where children can enjoy fun activities and a delicious lunch before distribution of backpacks. As co-chair of the Haverstraw Neighborhood Fund and trustee of Village of Haverstraw, I have had to privilege serve my community with fun events to support the children and families of Haverstraw. Last year, we were able to send over 900 children back to school ready for a successful year.
For 2020, our goal is to send 1,000 children back to school prepared with the necessary supplies
As August approaches fast, we are kindly asking you to help us achieve our goal of sending over 1,000 children back to school ready and prepared. We are collecting donations for backpacks and school supplies. We are looking for school supplies such as pencils, pens, notebooks, index cards, crayons, color pencils, markers, binders, and more.
Our Annual Community Thanksgiving & Christmas
Haverstraw Thanksgiving Event:Providing a hot meal to an individual or family in need in a warm comfortable place in something we look forward to every year. We deliver as well but what we are so grateful to is the smile on the faces and how grateful these people are for the help we can give them.
Haverstraw Christmas Event:Unfortunately, not every child in America gets to experience the joy and happiness that Christmas brings; that’s where the Haverstraw Neighborhood Fund steps in. During Christmas time, children from the community get to experience the exciting presence of Santa Claus while receiving presents. We provide a holiday luncheon on Christmas Day. The holiday spirit is seen though their eyes and heard through their laughter.
We believe that it takes a village to raise a child!
